Bhajan, in Sanskrit, means “praising the Lord through song.” It’s also a kind of religious song or hymn in Hinduism. This term spans different types of devotional tunes, ranging from simple mantras to the more intricate Hindu dhrupad. Bhajans are usually melodic, expressing adoration for God. It could also signify the soul’s inner harmony that yogis detect as they strive for unity with the divine or superior Self.
Bhajans, often with upbeat tunes and repeatable choruses, are easy to sing. These songs attract many people and play a vital role in community life in India, being sung more by groups than by solo singers. The group takes turns, with one person singing the first line or stanza and the rest following in chorus. Bhajans draw most of their themes from Hindu epics like the “Ramayana” and “Mahabharata,” or from the lives of gods like Rama, Krishna, and Shiva. In Surat Shabd yoga practice, the bhajan holds significant value. This kind of yoga concentrates on inner sound meditation. Here, bhajan represents the soul’s music. During meditation, the yogi centers their awareness on the ajna (third eye) chakra, ignoring all outer sounds while tuning into inner melodies.
