The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam is one of the most prestigious and challenging competitive examinations in India. Structure of the UPSC Exam

The UPSC exam consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

    • This is the first stage and serves as a screening test.
    • It consists of two objective-type papers:
      • General Studies Paper I (covers history, geography, polity, economy, science, and current affairs).
      • General Studies Paper II (CSAT – Civil Services Aptitude Test), which tests comprehension, logical reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.
    • Candidates need to qualify to appear for the next stage, but the marks are not counted in the final ranking.
  2. Main Examination (Mains):

    • This stage is descriptive in nature and tests the in-depth knowledge of candidates.
    • It includes nine papers:
      • Four General Studies papers.
      • One Essay paper.
      • Two Optional Subject papers (chosen by the candidate).
      • Two qualifying language papers (English and a regional language).
    • Marks obtained in the Mains are crucial for the final selection.
  3. Personality Test (Interview):

    • Candidates who clear the Mains are called for an interview conducted by the UPSC board.
    • The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, decision-making abilities, communication skills, and overall suitability for administrative roles.
